Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort is Sri Lanka’s pioneer health resort specializing in Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of medicine dating back about 5000 years. Ayurveda tackles the stresses and ailments of modern living in a uniquely natural and holistic way. The resort has recently undergone an extensive renovation and refurbishment, while retaining the warm and friendly ambience that guests have come to love.
It may seem bizarre to claim all-pervasive “knowledge” of something as utterly intangible as life itself. Yet the literal translation of Ayurveda is “knowledge” – or more precisely, the knowledge of what is required to ensure a long life of optimal physical, mental and spiritual health.
Ayubowan – “May You Live Long”…
“Lulled by the rhythmic pounding of the Indian Ocean nearby, relaxed by the kneading of daily oil massages, long-staying guests eventually emulate an aura of well-being, signalled by slower speech and a softer demeanour. No wonder, many of the guests end up rescheduling flights and extending their stays.” – The Nation, Thailand.
The resort is located on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, 85km from the International Airport, Barberyn Reef is literally “on the beach” – Sand stretches for miles along the shore and the resort is sheltered by a long coral reef running the length of the property, forming a natural lagoon ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Barberyn provides a unique environment enabling guests to combine the benefits of Ayurveda with a memorable tropical beach vacation.
The resort naturally offers yoga and meditation as part of the holistic approach to the ayurvedic programme and it is your choice to partake or not. It is however part of your wellness programme and the benefits are tremendous.
The local town Beruwala has everything in terms of supermarkets, banks, post office, station, too many busses and all infrastructure you will need. Some of the highlights of the area are:
The Galapota Temple, a few kilometers inland, on the south bank of the river, which dates back to the 12th Century.
Brief Garden, ten kilometers inland from Bentota, used to be the home of Bevis Bawa, older brother of renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Bawa’s house is the highlight and the artwork on display is eclectic, including a piece from one-time house guest, Donald Friend. Entry is Rs.125 or 50p and the place is open from 8am to 5pm daily.
Gangatilaka Vihara: South of the Kalu Ganga [Black River] Bridge on the main road. It is a hollow dagoba / {en:stupa} with an interesting painted interior.
The Kechimalai Mosque is said to be built on the site where the first Muslims landed on the island and is the focus for a major festival at the end of Ramadan.
Turtle Hatcheries: at the north end of Induruwa
There are River Cruises as well and a dinner cruise is recommended.
ACCOMMODATION
The resort consists of 75 comfortable rooms with ensuite facilities and terrace or balcony. The rooms have been recently renovated / refurbished and the landscaped gardens are still being completed, by the renowned Sri Lankan artist Laki Senanayake. Only a few rooms are air conditioned as most guests prefer the cool sea breeze; and air conditions are not really recommended in Ayurveda.
Beach Front Rooms
The rooms are built in groups of two, four, six and eight rooms, along the shoreline, very close to the waters edge. All rooms are large, comfortable and elegantly furnished with wood and natural materials. The majority have views of the ocean and open on to a terrace or a balcony.
CUISINE
The Dining room reflects the mood of the resort. Sri Lankan tradition requires that the host shares the food of the house with the guests. The best of ingredients go into the preparation of the meals and the service comes with a quiet efficiency, evidently gained through years of service.
The dining room spills out onto the terrace for dining Al fresco. A wide range of food is served at the breakfast and lunch buffet and dinner is mainly served according to the prescribed requirement of each guest. The kitchen and dining room work closely together and the dietary requirements of each guest is noted by the kitchen.
The Sunshine Restaurant
A beach restaurant serves tea and cold beverages. It is a magical place to enjoy the best Ceylon teas, while watching probably the best sunset in the world.
The core of the Ayurvedic experience is physical and mental fitness – wellbeing that comes through a balance of the doshas; body, mind and spirit. The Barberyn experience also encompasses self development: the opportunity to absorb Eastern philosophy and knowledge, and develop the clarity that comes from within.
