]]> Although there are many Naadam's throughout Mongolia in the summer months, this is the biggest and most prestigious event by far. The competitions are in three events �?" horse racing, archery and, all the locals' favourite, wrestling. The spectacle is so much more than that. The opening ceremony includes riders dressed as Chinggis Khan and his warriors, and the prize giving is a time for the full range of emotions. Outside the stadium, there's plenty of interest too. You'll probably head out for a look at some stage. Try the local foods on offer, and see what all those picnicking families are really about. An oasis of greenery in the arid lands of northern Botswana, wildlife gathers here in great numbers, and the many waterways offer unforgettable game viewing opportunities from mokoro dugout canoes. As well as the Okavango you'll see the stunning expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans, explore Mudumu National Park and cross into Namibia to visit two remote National Parks. The tour ends at the spectacular Victoria Falls.

]]> Our journey takes us through the wonderful West African country of Mali, travelling through remote desert landscapes to the isolated town of Timbuktu. We trek through Dogon villages with fabulous views, camping overnight in friendly villages. We also board a 'pinasse' (local boat) for a beautiful river journey, stopping at small encampments along the way and even spend a night in a nomadic Tuareg tent in the Sahara. Facilities are limited but for the true traveller, there is no more exciting destination than the city of Timbuktu!

We pass through little visited parts of Kazakhstan on the way to Central Asia. The ancient cities of Uzbekistan are a highlight and we spend time in Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. We visit the little-known country of Kyrgyzstan. And on to China, stopping at Kashgar and the various oases dotted along the edge of the Taklamakan desert before our journey culminates in Beijing.

In the bustling markets there is a brisk trade in cattle, ethnic jewellery and food items. These markets are the best place to observe the local life without interference.
