There is a ‘place of peace’ nestled amongst coconut palms which leads to a private crescent beach touching brilliant turquoise sea. This place is Amanpuri, on Thailand’s jade green island of Phuket where nature and culture harmoniously merge yielding a pure tranquillity where less means more and luxury is found in graciousness.
Amanpuri embodies the inner spirit of the Thai culture while allowing nature to reign supreme. The natural beauty combined with sincere warmth and a genuine soul allows for complete rejuvenation.
Amanpuri translated in Sanskrit as place of peace was opened in 1988, the first born to the Aman ‘Resorts family’. This tranquil prodigy has pride of place on Phuket in a secluded natural coconut grove on a peninsula leading down to a soft crescent shaped beach overlooking a mesmerizing turquoise Andaman Sea. Amanpuri continues to evolve with a peaceful purity, which is reflected in its gracious service and the wonderful construction of its pavilions, villas, and stylish midnight blue pools.
The sense of ‘belonging’ while staying at Amanpuri is in part due to the authentic and sympathetically conceived architecture exposing swooping multi-tiered roof-lines, understated, but deeply comfortable, locally inspired air-conditioned interiors, outside salas or private dining decks. These are connected by a series of elevated walkways which lead to the cool and expansive reception area, the long exotic slate-blue pool reflecting statuesque palms and tropical skies and the sweeping stone steps down to the beach. The gentle fragrance of the ubiquitous frangipani flower gently permeates the soft sea air.
Pavillion rates are determined according to view and location, pavilion 105 and 103 enjoy the best views of the Andaman Sea.
Villa Homes
Adjacent to the resort, almost hidden by coconut palms are 30 Villa Homes, many with ocean-front settings. Each villa consists of two to six separate bedrooms finished with Thai furnishings, art and antiques. Villas also enjoy a private pool plus living and dining Thai salas. A live-in maid and cook attend to all guests’ needs, including the preparation of Thai cuisine in your private kitchen. Amanpuri villas are ideal for small business meetings, weddings , honeymoons and special events.
The resort’s crescent-shaped white-sand beach is located at the foot of a cascading sweep of stone steps leading from the resort’s 27m main pool, restaurants and bar. The beach is lined with sundeck chairs and umbrellas. Amanpuri’s friendly ‘beach boys’ are available to offer the menu for light refreshments as well as cool cocktails and drinks, cold towels and ice. They will also ensure your feet are kept cool by watering pathways in the sand on the beach.
Amanresorts signature Spa is a holistic sanctuary for body and mind and uses exclusive products created from the purest ingredients.
The Spa is set in a secluded coconut grove where nature and nurture co-exist in perfect harmony and there are calming water features and outside salas made from sweet smelling varnished teak for yoga, pilates and meditation. The lush vegetation and birdsong complements the holistic treatments which take place in discreet therapy rooms where the art of simplicity has been mastered.
This unique cliff-side Spa at Amanpuri, uses its own natural and organic products and is dedicated to nourishing body and soul. Aman spa therapists are available to tailor-make a treatment programme based on an assessment of guest’s individual needs.
Six spacious Thai-style Spa Pavilions offer an open, light-filled space of wood and glass with a private steam room, shower, bath, dressing area and an outdoor meditation sala. Healing or traditional treatments can be enjoyed individually or as a couple.
Aman spa facilities also include a traditional sauna, granite steam room and a fountain terrace where health drinks are served. Complimentary guided yoga and meditation sessions are offered at daybreak in the open-sided teak salas set high on the hillside.
The Aman Spa Season runs from the beginning of May until the end of October each year. Enjoy a complimentary one-hour spa treatment with stays of three nights or more during the Aman Spa Season
Perfect conditions prevail year-round in the warm waters off Phuket. Sites for novices and veterans. PADI–accredited dive programmes are available from the Dive Centre. There are introductory one-day courses as well as itineraries for the more experienced.
Amanpuri’s dive operation, H2O Sportz, is a PADI training facility specialising in programmes both for experienced divers and newcomers. The introductory course is a quick, safe way to experience the thrill of scuba diving in one day. The course consists of a brief introduction to the equipment followed by a pool session, during which you will be introduced to basic skills. That afternoon, you will be diving with your instructor. PADI Open Water Certification and all other PADI courses are featured along with a wide range of dive destinations for experienced divers. Full gear is available.
Racha Island, less than 15km south of Phuket, is one of the most beautiful destinations in the region. The Malay name for “king,” Racha Island has two snow-white sand beaches and is a great snorkelling and diving site.
Just 40 minutes from Amancruises’ eastern base, this is a shallow dive (about 10m). Shark Point is famous for tame leopard sharks, bright-purple sea anemones, snappers and schools of moray eels.
About 30 minutes from Amancruises’ eastern base, this shallow dive follows the small island of Koh Kai Nok. A wide variety of fish and coral are visible from the reef edge of the island.
Perhaps the area’s most spectacular site, Koh Dok Mai is about 40 minutes away. This wall dive brings you through caves and crevices filled with scorpion fish, sea anemones, coral and all that the brilliant underwater world of the Andaman Sea has to offer.
Complimentary windsurfing, snorkelling, sea kayaking, body boarding, Hobie cat and Laser sailing are available on the beach. Beach boys are qualified to offer instruction as needed. We offer complimentary fins, snorkels and masks too.
The pristine fairways of five of Thailands top golf courses await your eager swing. Allow the warm balmy breezes and verdant greenery to loosen the muscles and ease the mind as you seek the bottom of the cup.
Five international standard golf courses are located within 30-40 minutes of Amanpuri and visits can be easily arranged. Complimentary clubs are available.
Although Phuket’s charm lies in its natural beaches and jungles, there are many interesting options to explore around Amanpuri.
When the ‘James Bond’ team filmed part of Man with the Golden Gun in Phang Nga Bay, Phuket achieved international fame. Soon, hotels were built, small towns rose and the population quadrupled. Talang was the major town until 150 years ago. Today, the most colourful streets can be seen in the capital, Phuket Town – from shopping to dining the resort staff will be pleased to make recommendations and reservations. Its central market bustles from early morning to noon and the Butterfly Garden along with the Aquarium are popular options. Phuket has two museums, one in Phuket Town and the other in Talang, the latter with some excellent maps and an inexplicably large collection of artefacts from the Mollucas. There are about 30 Buddhists temples on the island, among them Wat Chalong with its gilt statues of two revered monks; Wat Phra Thong with its half-buried Buddha statue and Wat Phra Nang Sang which includes 3,000 year old Buddha heads and some interesting allegorical frescoes. Phuket also has several Islamic Mosques. Private-car tours of the island’s countryside sights can be arranged. Hikers and nature lovers will enjoy the four-hour morning trek into the rainforest through the virgin jungle of Khao Phra Thaeo National Park and elephant treks are available.
Aside from Thailand’s own festivals, Phuket celebrates two major events uniquely its own. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival which generally takes place in October coincides with the Chinese calendar’s ninth lunar month. Each year devotees at the six major Taoist temples abstain from alcohol, meat, sex and drugs. Temple ceremonies, parades and music are daily events. So too is the fire walking, bladed-ladder climbing, serious body piercing and more. The annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta takes place each December. One of Asia’s leading regattas, it enjoys the royal patronage of the King of Thailand. Coming from all over the world, competitors embrace the wide blue spectrum, from world-class sailors to weekend pleasure boaters. The races themselves take place offshore from Phuket’s major beaches. There’s also a big run to the Phi Phi Islands. Plenty of parties for sailors and landlubbers alike take place throughout the King’s Cup Regatta.
Souvenirs can be found in shops around the island. Seashells and coconut art are plentiful. Nielloware, the black silverware finished with intricate designs, is produced here. Thai silk, antiques and pearls of high quality can also be found.
Bangkok airport offers an international gateway to other surrounding areas. Amansara in Cambodia is a 45-minute flight from Bangkok and a 15-minute complimentary transfer from Siem Reap airport to Amansara. Amankora offers five lodges across the central and western valleys of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The international airport of Paro takes 3¼ hours from Bangkok.
Amanpuri offers perhaps the best and most extensive selection of boats and cruise options of any resort in Asia, with a comprehensive range of boats from small dinghies for a picnic lunch at a nearby beach to luxury bluewater cruises aboard the 60ft Aman I.
Amancruises have a fleet of cruisers and sailing craft for sailing, deep-sea diving, snorkelling, overnight stays and sightseeing.
The fleet includes the Maha Bhetra (a 90ft three-cabin luxury cruiser), the Aman 1(60ft Bluewater yacht), the fast Amanpuri I and III (18ft speedboats built for speed and comfort) and Amanpuri II and IV (23ft Searay Lagunas powered by outboard engines). Other alternatives include Amancruises’ grande dame Maid Marina II, suitable for both day cruises and overnight trips. Divia III is a 72ft motor yacht, she is big, fast and comfortable. Fully air conditioned with a state of the art entertainment system she accommodate 20 for day trips and six for overnight cruises.
Champagne is a 48ft Concorde motor yacht. This performance sports cruiser is powered by twin engines and cruises at a speed of 22 knots. The vessel can house 12 persons for day charters and a couple for overnight cruises. Aman V has a six-seater covered seating platform and is powered by twin Yamaha engines used for a variety of activities. More adventurous alternatives include the fast and versatile Plabin dive boat fleet, two 38ft custom-built vessels are available with a cruising speed of over 30 knots for diving and snorkelling, and the Blowfish for fast cruising or fishing. Guests may also tour Phang Nga on a classic Chinese 40ft junk, the Sealion.
Visiting the nearby islands is an exhilarating experience. At the drop of anchor, the captain will happily allow passengers to explore the natural beauty where vegetation is dense, lush and tropical, where sea eagles glide overhead while lizards, sea egrets and curious ‘eyes’ look out from their vibrantly coloured habitat. Most of the islands have caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites leading to enclosed verdant green lagoons. Lunch and refreshments are served in the cool of the air-conditioned cabins with drinks and snacks being offered throughout the trips.

Start/Finish: Bangkok / Bangkok
This journey takes you across dazzling landscapes; centuries of tradition; complex cultures influenced by powerful civilisations; incredible local cuisine; the finest of everything.
Welcome to Indochina, an incredible journey of adventure and discovery. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience in the region, we’ve scoured this amazing region in search of the most scenic biking and walking paths, the best local cuisine, stunning architectural wonders and the most knowledgeable experts along with the grandest hotels available to create a trip that simply must be experienced to be believed.
On this incredible odyssey, we’ll visit four nations – Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia – where the ancient and modern worlds meet. Here, we’ll explore the lush forests of Thailand’s remote Golden Triangle, witness a prayer procession of 600 Buddhist monks in Laos, visit Vietnam’s historic Hoi An harbour and wander the ancient ruins and temples of Siem Reap in Cambodia over the course of 15 amazing days of discovery. Simple words barely do this remarkable trip any justice.
For this trip, we have secured our own private aircraft to whisk us from place to place. It’s enough to make even a WAG jealous.
Tours and transfers by air-conditioned coach. Non air-conditioned transportation may be used in remote areas. Except when trekking, accommodation is in medium class tourist or first class hotels based on two persons in twin / double room.
Sleeping facilities consists of mat / sleeping bag on floor with sheets during trekking with rucksack and water canteen provided. An American or continental breakfast daily during trekking, lunches and dinners are provided. 2nd class train with sleeper from Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai to Bangkok [Can upgrade where applicable]. Services of a local English speaking guide [when required].
In general the trekking on this tour will not be too hard for anybody who is reasonably physically fit. The precise itinerary of the trekking may have to be changed from time to time to take into account the weather and local conditions. The trek will be in a group of 6-12 people.
While trekking participants will sleep in village huts. As the huts consist of a single all-purpose room in which the villagers live and sleep, participants will sleep on the covered balcony or bamboo bed inside the hut. A mat, a sheet and a blanket will be provided but for additional comfort participants may wish to bring a sleeping bag as in mountain areas it can be quite cool at night, especially in December and January.
Additional equipment such as a rucksack, water canteen, life jacket is available from the operator in Chiang Mai. In addition, participants will require: Good trekking shoes [if not possible, good sports shoes are acceptable], rubber sandals for when not trekking, light warm clothing and rainwear during July-October and heavier warm clothing November -February. March-June will be a little cool in the evenings. A sun hat, torch, small first-aid kit (plasters, foot powder etc.), insect repellent, toilet articles and toilet paper.
As participants are required to carry their own kit, unnecessary items should be avoided. Meals while trekking will be prepared by the porter. During the day a stop will be made by a stream, in a hilltribe village or at some other suitable spot, allowing time for relaxation and for cooking a simple meal of noodles. In the evening dinner will be prepared in one of the huts by a porter. Similarly with breakfast the following day.
The rafts are about 2m X 15-18m and can carry approximately 7-8 persons. The rafting can take up to 6 hours in the summer when the level of water is shallow and current is slow. During the rainy season it might take 4-5 hours. Along some parts of the river there are many snags (dead trees, big rocks, broken wood, etc) which can sometimes be tricky. A life jacket is essential [Can be purchased on arrival in Bangkok] if you cannot swim as it will keep you afloat if, by chance, you should fall off the raft.
During the rainy season (or the dry season following heavy rainfall) the current will be quite strong and the guide will decide if the rafting should proceed or not. His advice on this matter should be strictly followed.
Thanks to several films and books, the Bridge on the River Khwae has become notoriously famous and attracted both Thais and foreigners to the site. If an ordinary black iron bridge can tell a story, you can be sure it’s a dramatic one.
The bridge spans across Maenam Khwae Yai which is a branch of Maenam Mae Klong. During the Japanese occupation of Thailand in World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army brought the iron bridge from Java. It was then resembled by Allied Prisoners of War (POW) under Japanese supervision. The bridge was part of a strategic railway route to Myanmar in which the Japanese aimed to secure supplies with which to conquer other western Asian countries. It was 415 kilometers long (about 303 kilometers in Thailand and about 112 kilometers in Burma) and passed through the Three Pagoda Pass in Sangkhlaburi District, the northern most part of Kanchanaburi province.
Construction started on September 16, 1942 at Nong Pladuk, and was completed on 25 December 1943. It is estimated that over 16,000 POWs from England, Australia, Holland and America died while building the bridge which was a target of bombing raids in 1945. In addition to this, approximate 90,000 laborers from Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia died during its construction.
Rebuilt after WWII, the bridge is still in use today with the curved portions of the bridge being that of the original. An attraction of note is the annual light and sound event at the bridge to commemorate the Allied attack in 1945.
The railway currently ends at Ban Tha Sao or Namtok Station, a distance of some 77 km. from Kanchanaburi Station. A special train running from Bangkok to Namtok Station is available on weekends and national holidays.

It is located in Mae On district, about an hour from Chiang Mai. For about three hours, you will be taken on an adventure, winging above and soaring across the forest canopy looking down on the tracks and streams far, far below. Glide through an ingenious system of platforms, sky bridges and cables spanning hundreds of meters between towering timbers in a rainforest as old as 1500 years. Each group goes with two specially trained guides. Each flyer wears a certified harness and is never unclipped from athe main cable. The cables are so strong that coupes can even swing together. You will be taken on a short trek to a nearby waterfall, which flows year round, but especially cascades with frothy force during the rainy season. After the excitement, enjoy a delightful meal of local cuisine in a small wooden restaurant set above a fast flowing stream. You should definitely make reservations before heading up. This is quickly becoming one of Chiang Mai’s highlight attractions and the number of flyers per day is limited.

The beginning of our adventure takes place in Thailand, where the grand city of Bangkok showcases some of the country’s most renowned temples; such notable landmarks include the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and the Temple of the Dawn. One of the best ways to become acquainted with the soul of any country is discovering the remoter destinations.
We will travel to the limestone hills of Northern Thailand and meet the residents of some of the world’s most secluded tribes. We will also travel to view the sights of Laos and embark on a boat journey through the Pak Ou Caves, where 4,000 ancient images of Lord Buddha decorate the rock walls.
Our trip to the mysterious Plain of Jars tells us various theories why hundreds of these jars are scattered across the horizon, but we can still only hypothesize as to the true reason. Nature is also responsible for some perplexing work of its own, especially with the many streams that flow through the elaborate network of caves below Vang Vieng.
In Vietnam, we are spoiled by immeasurable delights. We board a comfortable cruise vessel and make our way through Halong Bay, where massive limestone peaks pierce the crystal waters and tower over our boat as it weaves its way through the labyrinth of caves. This is the perfect time to sit back and relax as we’re served some of the local seafood prepared by expert chefs on board. There will be opportunity to get your feet wet when we step off the boat to wander the sandy beaches of some of the pristine islands that dot the waters.
