CNN GLOBAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM SURVEY REVEALS THAILAND OFFERS…

CNN International today announced the results of its Online Consumer Survey (OCS) on Travel and Tourism which reveals that Thailand was chosen as representing the best value for money for travellers in the Asia Pacific region. The survey conducted across CNN English websites had more than 5,000 respondents globally. Thailand came out as the best value in Asia-Pacific for respondents over China in second place and India in third.

The comprehensive survey also revealed that although times are tough, the recession hasn’t reduced people’s desire to travel. On the contrary — people are trading down, not trading out — but not compromising their experience. In addition, more business leaders are likely to travel over the next 12 months than in the past year.

* Overall the survey indicated that more people would travel for holiday over the next 12 months than last year, but 1 in 5 would make fewer trips

* 46% of business travellers in Asia Pacific claim the economic environment has had no impact on their business travel plans.

* 79% of Asia-Pac respondents feel they are likely to take a vacation in the region within the next 12 months. And the economic downturn isn’t affecting everyone’s travel plans. Asia-Pacific holidaymakers spent an average of just over US$4,000 on their last vacation, – ahead of the global average of $3,700.

* 71% of CNN’s audience of global travellers fly long-haul for leisure. Respondents take an average of 14 days vacation a year and holiday an average of three times a year.

Brand image and reputation also remains a critical factor for air travel, and survey respondents clearly feel that preferred, trusted airlines are able to command a premium. Respondents are also more likely to do fewer trips than look for cheaper hotels or discounted flights with budget airlines.

* 58% of Asia Pacific respondents are ‘willing to pay more to travel with my preferred airline’ (vs. 50% globally and just 41% of North American respondents)

* 61% of these Asia Pacific air travellers ‘prefer to fly with a trusted brand regardless of cost’. Furthermore, in difficult financial times, there is value for advertisers in targeting premium audiences.

* 83% of business travellers influence the choice of airlines and hotels when it comes to corporate travel.

* 40% of those who travel for work fly business or first class, make an average of five business trips per year and are away for an average of 19 days per year.

The survey comes as the latest PAX research for the full year 2008 once again reconfirms CNN as the leading channel in its genre for reaching each of the 3 main PAX groups: Affluent Adults, Business Decision Makers and Top Management. Among the Top Management group CNN is the leading international channel regardless of genre, while CNN.com continues to generate substantially higher reach than all other measured media sites.

Britain’s Princess Eugenie Visits Thailand’s Royal Phuket Marina

Britain’s Princess Eugenie, daughter of the Duke & Duchess of York and granddaughter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was the latest in a line-up of high profile guests visiting Thailand‘s premier ‘luxury lifestyle resort community’ the Royal Phuket Marina over the recent Easter holiday weekend.

The young princess was accompanied by four friends for lunch and a boat trip around Phuket’s famous Phang Nga Bay which is renowned for its iconic James Bond Island which featured in the ‘Man with the Golden Gun’ with Roger Moore, as well as Phi Phi Island which appeared in the film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Princess Eugenie and her friends were guests of marina developer Gulu Lalvani, a close friend of the British royal family. The tycoon founder of Binatone, the world’s second largest manufacturer of digital cordless phones, is partly based in London and features regularly on the Financial Times’ annual Rich List.

Princess Eugenie, 19, is the second daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York. She is on a gap year before university, having completed her A-levels at Britain’s prestigious Marlborough College.

National Country Parks

Take an excursion to National Country Park Sam Roi Yot, an hours drive south of Hua Hin. This coastal national park covering 98 square kilometers of park land with a forest-covered lime stone mountain range and Thailand’s largest fresh water marsh. Sam Roi Yot National Park meaning 300 mountain peaks is also home to a variety of plant species, birds and wild animals including the Golden-backed Woodpecker, White-crested Laughing Thrush, the Imperial and spotted Eagles, the Purple Heron, as well as the Dusky Leaf Monkey and Long tailed Macaque.

Pala-U Waterfall

Take an excursion to the jungle west of Hua Hin close to the Burmese border. The journey takes you through a region of scenic nature walks, mountains and valleys before reaching the Pala-U Waterfall. Take a nature walk through the rainforest with a steady climb from the first to fourth stages of the Waterfall along a trekking trail parallel to the waterfall stream. Lunch at local restaurants.

Jungle Safari

Beyond Sam Roi Yot National Park are more National Country Parks including Erawan, Sai Yoke, Sri NAKArin, and Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest National Park covering over 3,000 square kilometers, almost half of the Petburi Province. Ratchaburi Tour

Ratchaburi, the City of Kings, is within an hour’s drive north of Hua Hin. Ratchaburi can trace its origins back to the Draravati and Srivijay periods and beyond. Visit the summer residence of King Rama IV, the ancient temple of Mahathat with a Khmer style pagoda similar to that of Angkor Wat, Khao Wang Temple (previously the Royal Palace of King Rama V), The Ratchaburi National Museum and beautiful caves at Khao Chong Phran which house more than one hundred Buddha images.

Floating Market and Rose Garden

The floating market of Damnoen Saduak is situated approximately 1.5 hours north of Hua Hin. Take a boat trip along the canals to the centre of the market. Continue to Nakorn Pathom to visit the largest pagoda in Thailand, followed by a leisurely lunch at the Rose Garden Country Club. Attend Thai Village show for a flavour of Thai life, Buddhist monk ordination procession, Thai dancing, Thai Boxing and local ceremonies.

Measuring 6,654 yards from the back tees and 5,464 yards from the forward tees, the course features a wealth of scenic lagoons, coconut groves and undulating fairways, set against the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding mountains and the nearby sea.

    Meandering through a labyrinth of lagoons, the course requires golfers to play with great accuracy and to select clubs carefully. Water looms on 13 of the 18 holes and threatens to swallow any shot veering too far off course. On several holes, adventurous long hitters will certainly enjoy taking a rewarding gamble by cutting corners, while on other holes, strategic iron play is a must!

    The signature par 3 sixteenth hole offers a green encased by a myriad of gaping bunkers, while the short par 4 ninth hole looks deceptively easy, until you realize you are forced to hit into the small island green.

    The resort’s crescent-shaped white-sand beach is located at the foot of a cascading sweep of stone steps leading from the resort’s 27m main pool, restaurants and bar.     Diving & Snorkelling

    Perfect conditions prevail year-round in the warm waters off Phuket. Sites for novices and veterans. PADI–accredited dive programmes are available from the Dive Centre. There are introductory one-day courses as well as itineraries for the more experienced.

    Amanpuri’s dive operation, H2O Sportz, is a PADI training facility specialising in programmes both for experienced divers and newcomers. The introductory course is a quick, safe way to experience the thrill of scuba diving in one day. The course consists of a brief introduction to the equipment followed by a pool session, during which you will be introduced to basic skills. That afternoon, you will be diving with your instructor. PADI Open Water Certification and all other PADI courses are featured along with a wide range of dive destinations for experienced divers. Full gear is available.

    Racha Island

    Racha Island, less than 15km south of Phuket, is one of the most beautiful destinations in the region. The Malay name for “king,” Racha Island has two snow-white sand beaches and is a great snorkelling and diving site.

    Shark Point

    Just 40 minutes from Amancruises’ eastern base, this is a shallow dive (about 10m). Shark Point is famous for tame leopard sharks, bright-purple sea anemones, snappers and schools of moray eels.

    Koh Kai Nok

    About 30 minutes from Amancruises’ eastern base, this shallow dive follows the small island of Koh Kai Nok. A wide variety of fish and coral are visible from the reef edge of the island.

    Koh Dok Mai

    Perhaps the area’s most spectacular site, Koh Dok Mai is about 40 minutes away. This wall dive brings you through caves and crevices filled with scorpion fish, sea anemones, coral and all that the brilliant underwater world of the Andaman Sea has to offer.

    Snorkelling
    The nearby reef is flush with fish. The best snorkelling is above the coral reef, between the swimming platform and the headland in front of the villas. Snorkellers can swim among the fish or hand feed them. At 8:30am every day, guides take the guests for a snorkel to the area where a population of reef fish are eager to be fed. 18ft Searay Bowriders driven by trained crew, are available for water-skiing at a ominal fee. All these activities are available between December and April, weather and tide permitting.

    Complimentary windsurfing, snorkelling, sea kayaking, body boarding, Hobie cat and Laser sailing are available on the beach. Beach boys are qualified to offer instruction as needed. We offer complimentary fins, snorkels and masks too.

    Golf

    The pristine fairways of five of Thailands top golf courses await your eager swing. Allow the warm balmy breezes and verdant greenery to loosen the muscles and ease the mind as you seek the bottom of the cup.

    Things to do

    Although Phuket’s charm lies in its natural beaches and jungles, there are many interesting options to explore around Amanpuri.

    Island touring

    When the ‘James Bond’ team filmed part of Man with the Golden Gun in Phang Nga Bay, Phuket achieved international fame. Soon, hotels were built, small towns rose and the population quadrupled. Talang was the major town until 150 years ago. Today, the most colourful streets can be seen in the capital, Phuket Town – from shopping to dining the resort staff will be pleased to make recommendations and reservations. Its central market bustles from early morning to noon and the Butterfly Garden along with the Aquarium are popular options. Phuket has two museums, one in Phuket Town and the other in Talang, the latter with some excellent maps and an inexplicably large collection of artefacts from the Mollucas. There are about 30 Buddhists temples on the island, among them Wat Chalong with its gilt statues of two revered monks; Wat Phra Thong with its half-buried Buddha statue and Wat Phra Nang Sang which includes 3,000 year old Buddha heads and some interesting allegorical frescoes. Phuket also has several Islamic Mosques. Private-car tours of the island’s countryside sights can be arranged. Hikers and nature lovers will enjoy the four-hour morning trek into the rainforest through the virgin jungle of Khao Phra Thaeo National Park and elephant treks are available.

    Festivals

    Aside from Thailand’s own festivals, Phuket celebrates two major events uniquely its own. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival which generally takes place in October coincides with the Chinese calendar’s ninth lunar month. Each year devotees at the six major Taoist temples abstain from alcohol, meat, sex and drugs. Temple ceremonies, parades and music are daily events. So too is the fire walking, bladed-ladder climbing, serious body piercing and more. The annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta takes place each December. One of Asia’s leading regattas, it enjoys the royal patronage of the King of Thailand. Coming from all over the world, competitors embrace the wide blue spectrum, from world-class sailors to weekend pleasure boaters. The races themselves take place offshore from Phuket’s major beaches. There’s also a big run to the Phi Phi Islands. Plenty of parties for sailors and landlubbers alike take place throughout the King’s Cup Regatta.

    Shopping

    Souvenirs can be found in shops around the island. Seashells and coconut art are plentiful. Nielloware, the black silverware finished with intricate designs, is produced here. Thai silk, antiques and pearls of high quality can also be found.

    Neighbouring Aman Resorts

    Bangkok airport offers an international gateway to other surrounding areas. Amansara in Cambodia is a 45-minute flight from Bangkok and a 15-minute complimentary transfer from Siem Reap airport to Amansara. Amankora offers five lodges across the central and western valleys of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The international airport of Paro takes 3¼ hours from Bangkok.

    Cruises

    Amanpuri offers perhaps the best and most extensive selection of boats and cruise options of any resort in Asia, with a comprehensive range of boats from small dinghies for a picnic lunch at a nearby beach to luxury bluewater cruises aboard the 60ft Aman I.

    Amancruises have a fleet of cruisers and sailing craft for sailing, deep-sea diving, snorkelling, overnight stays and sightseeing.

    The fleet includes the Maha Bhetra (a 90ft three-cabin luxury cruiser), the Aman 1(60ft Bluewater yacht), the fast Amanpuri I and III (18ft speedboats built for speed and comfort) and Amanpuri II and IV (23ft Searay Lagunas powered by outboard engines). Other alternatives include Amancruises’ grande dame Maid Marina II, suitable for both day cruises and overnight trips. Divia III is a 72ft motor yacht, she is big, fast and comfortable. Fully air conditioned with a state of the art entertainment system she accommodate 20 for day trips and six for overnight cruises.

    Champagne is a 48ft Concorde motor yacht. This performance sports cruiser is powered by twin engines and cruises at a speed of 22 knots. The vessel can house 12 persons for day charters and a couple for overnight cruises. Aman V has a six-seater covered seating platform and is powered by twin Yamaha engines used for a variety of activities. More adventurous alternatives include the fast and versatile Plabin dive boat fleet, two 38ft custom-built vessels are available with a cruising speed of over 30 knots for diving and snorkelling, and the Blowfish for fast cruising or fishing. Guests may also tour Phang Nga on a classic Chinese 40ft junk, the Sealion.

    Visiting the nearby islands is an exhilarating experience. At the drop of anchor, the captain will happily allow passengers to explore the natural beauty where vegetation is dense, lush and tropical, where sea eagles glide overhead while lizards, sea egrets and curious ‘eyes’ look out from their vibrantly coloured habitat. Most of the islands have caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites leading to enclosed verdant green lagoons.     It is located in Mae On district, about an hour from Chiang Mai. For about three hours, you will be taken on an adventure, winging above and soaring across the forest canopy looking down on the tracks and streams far, far below. Glide through an ingenious system of platforms, sky bridges and cables spanning hundreds of meters between towering timbers in a rainforest as old as 1500 years. Each group goes with two specially trained guides. Each flyer wears a certified harness and is never unclipped from athe main cable. The cables are so strong that coupes can even swing together. You will be taken on a short trek to a nearby waterfall, which flows year round, but especially cascades with frothy force during the rainy season. After the excitement, enjoy a delightful meal of local cuisine in a small wooden restaurant set above a fast flowing stream. You should definitely make reservations before heading up. This is quickly becoming one of Chiang Mai’s highlight attractions and the number of flyers per day is limited.
